CERT training follows the FEMA-developed curriculum, an 8-module series of two-hour classes teaching CERT Organization, Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Medical Operations, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism, and Brisbane specific Damage Assessment. Training culminates with a disaster exercise allowing students to demonstrate their new skills. Additional CPR/AED/First Aid training is encouraged as a CERT member; however, that training is not included in the basic CERT class.
During a catastrophic emergency and after first confirming safety for their own family, CERTs can be deployed to walk their assigned residential routes and act as "eyes and ears" of the City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to assist with situation status updates and priority assignment of resources. The CERT training in utility shutoff, first aid, and light urban search and rescue helps to mitigate further property damage and assist with the care and comfort for fellow citizens in need. CERTs can also train in shelter operations, donation management and points of distribution in order to assist in shelters and with the distribution of critical supplies.
During less catastrophic emergencies, CERTs can be called upon to assist with traffic control, fill sandbags for flood control efforts during heavy rain events, and aid City Staff in othr endeavors as needed.

CERT BLOCK CAPTAINS
The CERT Block Captain is responsible for a "block" or "route". Each route contains approximately 15 residences that are geographically mapped throughout the city's residential neighborhoods. To become and maintain "Block Captain" status, the volunteer must maintain certifications in CPR and First Aid and be trained in Damage Assessment. In the event of an obvious disaster, block captains will automatically commence walking their routes to perform damage assessment.
